Opening weekend of deer season is a big deal around here. We push church back an hour so you can hunt the morning, come straight in your camo, and eat a free BBQ lunch while we have church. Hunters and non-hunters—everybody is welcome.

Big crowds, great barbecue, camo everywhere, and memories from one of our favorite Sundays of the year.
An East Texas opening-weekend tradition.

Around East Texas, opening weekend of deer season is a pretty big deal. Alarm clocks go off before daylight, coffee gets poured, trucks head down backroads, and everybody hopes that big buck on the game camera finally makes a mistake.
Opening weekend can leave people feeling like they have to choose between getting in the deer stand and getting to church. Back in 2013, founding Pastor Jordan Wilson—who grew up hunting and still loves deer season—had a simple idea: why not give everybody a chance to do both?
So we pushed church back an hour. Get your morning hunt in, come straight from the woods in your camo, grab a free BBQ lunch, and enjoy some music and church with us. We plan to wrap up around 1:30 or 2:00, which leaves time to get back in the stand for the afternoon hunt.
Hunt the morning. Church at lunch. Back in the stand that afternoon. You have to eat lunch anyway—why not eat with us?
Camo Sunday has been part of Church in the Country since the very beginning. What started as a simple idea has become one of our biggest and most anticipated Sundays of the year. While opening weekend can mean a smaller crowd at some churches, we’re pulling out extra chairs.
And we don’t do it halfway. We’re talking free barbecue, live country music, special guests, and more than 40 hunting and outdoor door prizes donated by our church family. Deer stands, game cameras, hunting gear, gift cards, and plenty of other good stuff. Everybody gets a free ticket when they arrive, and nobody pays a dime to enjoy the day.
Never been in a deer stand? Come anyway. You don’t need a hunting license, a trophy buck on the wall, or even a stitch of camo to fit in. We love deer season, good barbecue, and bringing people together.
